Greetings to the VFQ community from Baie-Comeau.

The students of my Secondary III class have identified their topic/approach to this project. We will focus in on how industry has shaped our town. We identified four major topics: hydro electricity, forestry, pulp/paper and aluminum production.

We have contact our local historical association (french) and on Tuesday, Feb. 3, a rep will be coming into school and we will be discussing with him our project, but also the need for digital archives (photographs, mainly). Although we have an anglo community association, the digital archives are held for the most part at the Societe Historique de la Cote-Nord (located 750 metres from the school!).

In addition, we are having a dry-run interview with one of our key people who worked with Hydro Quebec in the early days. We have 20 questions (yes, that is too many) but we want to see what types of questions are worth asking, which need to be modified and which need to be dropped.

We will be recording the interview and will play it back a number of times to help identify key sections to use in the podcast. When Louise Abbot and Mark come to town on Feb 11-12, we will review the experience with them and we hope to get some insight on the interview process.

We have the other people all lined up for interviews that will take place during the week of Feb. 23.

It is slowly coming together... our students are quite well-versed in terms of script writing since they are in the midst of preparing a 30-minute show in collaboration iwth LEARN and CTV (s'Cool). It is to be aired on Sunday, February 8th at 10:30a.m. on CTV.

Hello, Stephen and students,

Mark Goldman and I just returned from our trip to La Tabatière on the Lower North Shore last night. The students there are preparing a radio documentary about the historic seal fishery, and they are very enthusiastic about beginning the interviews, creating sound effects, and choosing or possibly even creating music. During our session with them, the students did a practice interview with the digital recorder; this proved to be a valuable exercise.

I'm glad to hear that your work is progressing well, too. Mark and I are looking forward to meeting with you all in a few days.

If you have questions for us before then, please don't hesitate to contact us through the Forum or by email.

All the Best,
Louise
